FROM THE ARCHIVE
🖥️ The third outing of a new section where I'll choose a video I love from YouTube’s treasure trove of music videos, live performances and curiosities.
This time, the Jem Cohen and Peter Sillen documentary collage Benjamin Smoke about the frontman of the the cult Atlanta, Georgia band Smoke. At one point the film features Patti Smith reading the lyrics to her song Death Singing, “he sings of youth enraged / and the burning of Atlanta / and these viral times”, which pays fitting tribute to the sensitive and self-destructive Southern poet Benjamin, who opened for her shortly before he died, aged just 39, from liver failure linked to hepatitis C and AIDS.
